Mad
Dogs Shine for Virginia at State Wars Tourney Join
Forces with Richmond Rattler to Medal
State
Wars VI in Chicago was a great tournament
for the Mad Dogs. Team selection was held at the home
of the Richmond
Rattlers and five Mad Dogs from the 1996
team were selected to represent Virginia, with head
coaching provided by Mad Dog Coach Alex Eng. Overall
the team did well against the competition that included
the usual nationally ranked players and teams based
upon the national teams. The team was undefeated in
round robin seeding with four games and went into the
playoffs as the number one team. Facing a tough New
Yrk opponent in the semi-finals, the VA team lost in
overtime after playing a hard fought game where the
bounces seemed to be favoring New York with some unlucky
bounces and goals. The VA team re-energized for their
final game and beat Illinois to come home with the Bronze
medal. The Virginia Team swept
the individual awards in their division for the Top
Scorer (Kyle Eng), Best Defensemen
(Isaiah Miles-Richmond Rattlers) and Top Goalie (Alex
DeYoung). Overall, two of the three top spots
were claimed by Mad Dog players. Two Mad Dogs (Kyle
Eng and Goalie Alex DeYoung)
also made team Honor for the All Star game.

Mad
Dogs Launch 8U & 10U Summer Session Enthusiastic
Youngsters, Coaches Extend Hockey Season
This summer, after the
National Championships, the 8U and 10U Mad Dogs coaching
staff thought it was a good idea to keep the inline
hockey season going. Since the first week of July,
about 20 inline players have worked every Thursday
from 6:50pm until 8:20pm to improve their hockey skills.
On each of those nights at The
Box inline hockey rink, Coaches John
Young, Mike McMahon, and the rest of the Mad Dogs
coaches could be heard coaxing the kids through drills
that will prepare them for next season and beyond.
In addition to the Thursday practices, Coach Young
worked with Loudoun
County Parks and Recreation to secure
the Trailside
Park rink in Ashburn every Saturday throughout
the summer from 8:30am to 10:00am. It has been a great
way to let the kids just have fun on the rink through
scrimmage and free play. The weather has been great
all summer and the scores usually end up around 20-18!!
On July 17, 2010, several of the Mad Dogs participated
in an inline hockey clinic at the Gardens
Ice House in Laurel, Maryland, with profession
inline hockey player Itan Chavira of the La
Pama Cyclones pro inlnie hockey team!
Logan Young, Landon Young,
Justin Evans, Chris Purpura,
and Chris’ brother Kyle Purpura
all participated and had a blast.

Mad
Dogs Second That Motion Several
Teams Are Finalists in Winchester and Richmond
Multiple Mad Dogs teams
advanced to the finals during the past two weekends
of Virginia hockey competition. In the ECHO
Regional Championhips on May 1-2 at the Sportsplex
in Winchester, Virginia, the 16U Mad Dogs, skating
with five 14U skaters, made it to the Silver Division
finals against the Potomac
Mavericks, and due to the late night
time slot for the finals, both teams who call The
Box in Chantilly their home rink agreed
to skip the championship game and call the final a
draw. Also in Winchester, the 8U, 10U, and 14U Mad
Dogs entered their championship games undefeated in
round robin play before claiming silver medals, and
the 10U team stayed on and played very competitively
in the 12U division. Then, on May 10th, the 14U Mad
Dogs traveled to the Shooter's
Indoor Sportsplex in the Richmond area
and edged the Raleigh
Speed in a thrilling 3-2 double overtime
semi-final victory, advancing to the finals of the
2Hot4Ice
Regional Championships, and bringing home a siver
medal to add to their trophy case.

and 14U Teams Win Silver at Coastal Cup Regional
On April 9-11, 2010,
five Mad Dog teams played in the Coastal
Cup Regional Championships at The
Box Inline Hockey Rink in Chantilly,
VA, and two of the teams made it to the championship
game and earned silver medals. The 12U team looked
particularly strong given that this was the team's
first tournmanet of the year and has several 10U players
on the roster.

Mad
Dogs Open Season 8U
Team Wins Gold, 10U Team Takes Silver
On March 20-21, 2010,
two Mad Dog teams traveled to the Richmond area and
came away with the club's first medals of the 2010
season in the TORHS
Regional Championships at Shooters
Indoor Sportsplex in Midlothian, Virgina.
The 8U team won all three games that it played and
took the gold medal by beating the Richmond
Rattlers. Landon Young
was named MVP, Bauer Morrissey was
the top "Point-Getter," and Dominik
Jordan was named the top goalie. The team
won its games by a combined 19-2 score and everyone
chipped in to help win the tournament. Owen
Thomas scored 5 goals (including four in
one game!!), Justin Evans used his
speed to score a bushel of points, Janae Conner
scored her first two travel team goals, and Hannah
Ehlers played awesome and powerful defense
throughout the tournament. Justin Evans
and Owen Thomas won "Playmaker"
T-shirts and Owen Thomas, Landon
Young, and Janae Conner
each received the coveted "Hard-Working"
helmet for their work at the tournament. They joined
previous winners Dominik Jordan,
Justin Evans, and Natalie
Shand, who all won the helmet for their work
at the "Winter Wars" tournament sponsored
by State
Wars Hockey the weekend before in Feasterville,
PA. Dominik the "Dominator"
even won a free slice of pizza for pitching a shutout
in the second game two. Great job kids. Keep up the
good work!
Meanwhile, a very young
and relatively inexperienced 10U Mad Dogs team gave
the 10U Richmond
Rattlers all they could handle during
the TORHS
tournament. Every game went down to the wire and the
team made great strides in taking home the TORHS
Regional silver medal. Forwards Logan Young
and Mason McMahon scored three goals
each, Noah Ehlers scored two, and
Kylee Flynn and Alec Coakley
chipped in one goal each. Noah Ehlers
and Alec Coakley, along with Anthony
Smarrelli, Mykyta Andryeyeshyn,
and Nate DeCecco played solid defense
in front of the capable goaltending of Corbin
Flynn and Chris Beaulieu.
Carter Cunningham provided solid
offensive punch and chipped in several assists while
youngster Chris Purpura hounded the
puck all day. The team lost its first game in a 3-2
heartbreaker and led the third game for almost the
entire time only lose when Alec Coakley
hit the crossbar late in the match and then saw the
Richmond
Rattlers march down the rink to score
the winner. Noah Ehlers, Mason
McMahon, and Anthony Smarrelli
all received the "Hard-Working" helmet for
their awesome work in Midlothian. They joined previous
winners Logan Young and Corbin
Flynn, who were both awarded the helmet during
the Winter Wars tournament in Feasterville, PA.

Mad
Dogs Success Extends to Ice
On February 26, 2010,
the Virginia State Ice Hockey Championship capped
a season that saw current and former Mad Dogs at the
top of nearly every measure of ice hockey success
in our area. Playing on the same ice surface normally
used by superstars like Alexander Ovechkin during
Washington Capitals practices, the championship game
at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex saw 2009 Mad
Dogs Coach Mike Strycharz leading his Woodbridge
Vikings team to a 6-3 state championship victory over
the Herndon Hornets.
As
reported in the Washington Post, the
Viking win in front of a boisterous capacity crowd
was led by a 5-point performance from '92
Mad Dog Seve Cordova and a 4-point performance
from his twin brother, '92 Mad Dog Tony Cordova.
Mad Dogs Coach Hugo Cordova noted
after the championship game that his sons Tony and
Seve (and 12U Mad Dog son Alec) gained
their excellent stick handling and rink vision skills
while playing the possession-oriented game of inline
hockey in Prince William County and for the Mad Dogs.
'93
Mad Dog Dylan Talbot contributed a goal
and an assist in the Viking victory, while, '95
Mad Dog Ian Jonesi notched Herndon's first goal
to start the championship game comeback that fell
just a little bit short.
Between periods, '93
Mad Dog Andrew Baron of Stonebridge High
School and Seve Cordova of Woodbridge
were
honored as Northern
Virginia Scholastic Hockey League (NVSHL)
First Team All Stars, joining the many other current
or former Mad Dogs named to the NVSHL All Star team.
During the 2009-2010 regular season, almost 70% of
the top
scorers in the NVSHL were current or
former Mad Dogs, again reinforcing the fact that many
of the best ice hockey players in our Region have
played for the Mad Dogs.

Mad Dogs Tryouts Announced
Tryouts for the elite-level
Mad Dogs Inline Hockey Club based in Northern Virginia
will be held at The Box inline hockey rink in Chantilly
on Wednesday, February 3, 2010.
With nearly a dozen National Championships and scores
of Regional titles under our belt, the Mad Dogs are
the region's leading inline hockey club. We compete
at the highest level of the sport. We have very experienced
coaches who believe that inline hockey helps to improve
ice hockey skills. Indeed, many of the leading ice hockey
players in the region have played with the Mad Dogs.
Unlike the ice hockey world
in which it is very difficult to get the opportunity
to compete in a National Championship, playing inline
hockey for the Mad Dogs provides an exciting chance
to experience a National Championship tournament with
a club that has a proven track record of success. Last
year, we added two more Junior Olympic championships
to our trophy case.
As Washington Capitals
owner Ted Leonsis said, "If you're looking
for a first rate inline club, you don't need to look
any further than the Mad Dogs."
We attract players from
all over the region, including players from Team Maryland,
Little Caps, Junior Nats, Prince William, Ashburn Xtreme,
Reston Raiders, Montgomery, and other ice hockey clubs.
This year, we will be fielding teams in every age category
and we may field two teams in certain age groups if
enough elite-level players try out.
The February 3rd tryouts
will be held at the following times:
If for some reason an interested player
cannot make it to the tryout, contact Mad Dogs Administrator
Gary Jonesi at 703-304-6392 (cell) or at maddogshockey@gmail.com.
Note, however, that all players wishing to be considered
for the Mad Dogs MUST submit a tryout registration/waiver
form.
Although we work hard to
improve the skills of our players, we also aim to make
playing for the Mad Dogs a fun experience while minimizing
the time and financial commitment on families. Our season
begins in mid/late March and ends in June or early July.
Many of our players compete in other Spring activities
such as lacrosse and off-season ice hockey. This is
possible because most of our teams only practice once
every week or two at most and enter 4-6 weekend tournaments,
predominantly in the local region (including at our
Chantilly rink).
Good luck to everyone
at tryouts!
To learn more about how
the Mad Dogs did last season, including the two Junior
Olympic championships that we won, see the 2009
Archives.
Team managers needing
to order uniforms should try to place all of their
team's uniform orders at once, and by mid/late February
if possible. This is because shipments normally take
about four weeks from the time that an order is placed,
allowing teams to enter tournaments in mid/late March
with its new uniforms.
Team managers should
place orders by: (1) contacting Ace Jerseys at 800-830-0753
or 610-833-5513, or by e-mail at info@acejerseys.com
to give them the manager's contact information and
set up the team's account; and then (2) using the
username and password supplied by Ace Jerseys to order
and pay online at their online
ordering page. The Mad Dogs are existing
customers, so Ace Jerseys already has the Mad Dogs
Hockey uniform template and will just need a list
of each players' names, jersey numbers, and sizes.
If players did not get
measured for uniforms at tryouts, sizing information
can be obtained at acejerseys.com.
For 2010, prices are
$69 for each jersey and $65 for pants, for a total
of $203 (includes one home and one away jersey) plus
shipping costs.
If team managers have
any questions, Ace Jersey employees John or Yvona
Pellegrino, or Mark Yeager or Mark Watson, can assist
you.
The
Mad Dogs are the Capitol area’s leading travel
inline club, with teams consistently winning regional
championships and now numerous national championships.
With coaches from the Ashburn Xtreme, Reston Raiders,
Washington Little Capitals, and other top travel
ice hockey clubs, the Mad Dogs offer the highest
quality inline hockey in the region.
