2008
Potential Tournaments
by
Mad Dogs Administrator Steve Baldwin
Explanatory
Notes
This
is not a listing of every event Mad Dogs teams should
participate in but rather a list of options. It is up
to each team to decide which events to attend.
Most
of the tournaments listed are regional qualifiers for
a national championship of some kind. You usually have
to place in the top four at a regional to proceed to
a national championship but you don’t have to
go to the nationals even if you qualify. Many Mad Dog
teams will qualify for four or more different national
championships but may only attend one or two of them.
All
Regionals are Interchangeable within an Inline Hockey
Organization
If
the goal is to qualify for a particular national championship
but your team fails to qualify at the regional in question,
you are allowed to enter another regional and take another
shot at qualifying. There is often more than one regional
qualifier in a region.
There
is nothing to prevent a team from entering as many
regionals as you like. How the team places in a regional
qualifier will usually determine if the team plays
in the lower or higher bracket at the national event.
If you are enter more than one regional qualifier
for the same organization, then the highest placement
will be the determining one.
Oftentimes,
Mad Dog teams will submit slightly different rosters
for each regional so as to create a large “reserve
player” list. This is done so that the team has
maximum flexibility as to who to use at Nationals should
the team be short regular team members. Remember, a
player simply has to be LISTED on a regional roster
in order to play at the national but he doesn’t
have to actually play or appear at the regional.
Most
Tournaments Use Block Scheduling
The
dates given for many tournaments are for all age
divisions combined. Typically, each age group
will have only 1-2 days scheduled at a regional and
2-3 days at a national championship.
Dates
and places change frequently in the inline world. The
team manager always needs to be checking the web sites
to make sure the tournaments you plan to attend have
not been cancelled.
Also,
deciding which nationals to attend may be dependent
on what players you are missing. For example, if your
top players are playing for the National Inline team,
are attending the Southeastern Player Development ice
hockey camp or the US Nationals Ice Hockey championships,
then you want to make sure you choose a inline national
at which most of your best players will be able to attend.
Some
Tournaments Have Membership Requirements
Some
tournaments have membership requirements. To participate
in TORHS, AAU, and the Jr. Olympics, for example, all
players must be registered as AAU members. To play at
ECHO, 2Hot4Ice, USA Hockey Inline and NARCH, all players
must be members of USA Hockey Inline.
Different
Tournaments Play at Different Talent Levels
Here’s
how I rank the major inline associations and their tournaments:
Most
competitive: NARCH, TORHS, Jr. Olympics (AAU)
These
tourneys are the pinnacle of inline hockey. If your
team is an “older year” team in the age
bracket, and early tournaments indicate the team is
stronger than usual, then I would suggest that you consider
attending one of these events, assuming the team qualified
at the respective regional. If Mad Dogs are to be “sponsored”
someday, then some of our teams will need to place high
at one of these elite tournaments. The talent level
at these events is at the level of Tier 1 ice hockey.
Middle
of the road: AAU Regionals/Nationals, 2HOT4ICE
Nationals, USARS Nationals, USA Hockey Inline (Club
Division), Coastal Cup
This
is the category many Mad Dog teams have competed in
for the last few years. Older year Mad Dogs teams can
usually win or place at one of these tournaments. Younger
year Mad Dog teams can be competitive here but they
may have to compete in the “lower bracket.”
Least
competitive: ECHO, independent tournaments
Most
Mad Dog teams clobber everyone at these tournaments.
However, a younger year Mad Dog team or a “Blue”
team should consider attending one of these events.
All
Nationals Have Different Divisions Based on Talent
Every
National championship has at least two levels of competition
– an upper and an lower level – and they
go by different names such as Gold & Silver, Elite
& Competitive, Stars & Stripes etc. Some inline
organizations will allow the team to place themselves,
but in most cases, how a team performs at a regional
qualifier will determine what category they will be
placed in.
Independent
Tournaments
Independent
tournaments are those tournaments which are not qualifiers
for anything. They are typically hosted by an inline
rink or a league and can be a lot of fun. If you feel
your team would benefit from competing in one of these
tournaments, the following rinks are well known for
hosting independent tournaments. They’re all within
