2010 Possible
Tournaments
by Mad Dogs Administrator Gary Jonesi
Explanatory Notes
This is not a listing of every event available
or that Mad Dogs teams should participate in, but rather
it is a list of tournaments: (a) within about three hours
or so of the Washington, DC area; and (b) the national
champtionship tournaments. It is up to each team to decide
which events to attend.
Enter Relevant Regionals to Qualify For
Nationals. Most of the tournaments listed are regional
qualifiers for a national championship of some kind. Many
Mad Dog teams will qualify for several national championships
but may only attend one or two of them (it is Mad Dogs
policy that all teams should participate in at least one
national championship).
Teams Can Play in Multiple Regional Tournaments.
If the goal is to qualify for a particular national championship
but a team fails to qualify at the regional in question,
it is allowed to enter another regional and take another
shot at qualifying. There is often more than one regional
qualifier in the same geographic area. There is nothing
to prevent a team from entering as many regionals as it
likes. How the team places in a regional qualifier will
usually determine if the team plays in the lower or higher
bracket at the national event. If a team enters more than
one regional qualifier for the same organization, then
the highest placement normally will be the determining
one for nationals.
Submit Large Rosters. Oftentimes,
Mad Dog teams will submit slightly different rosters for
each regional so as to create a large “reserve player”
list. This is done so that the team has maximum flexibility
as to who to use at Nationals should the team be short
regular team members. Usually, a player simply has to
be LISTED on a regional roster in order to play at the
national but he doesn’t have to actually play or
appear at the regional. Check with the sponsoring organization
to be sure.
Most Tournaments Use Block Scheduling.
The dates given for many tournaments are for all age divisions
combined. Typically, each age group will have only 1-2
days scheduled at a regional and 2-3 days at a national
championship.
Dates and Places Change Frequently in
the Inline World. The team manager always needs to
be checking the web sites to make sure the tournaments
that it plans to attend have not been cancelled. Also,
deciding which nationals to attend may be dependent on
what players the team may be missing. For example, if
a team’s top players are playing for the National
Inline team, or are attending the Southeastern Player
Development ice hockey camp or the US Nationals Ice Hockey
championships, then teams will want to make sure that
it chooses an inline national at which most of its best
players will be able to attend.
Most Tournaments Have Membership Requirements.
For example, to participate in events sponsored by 2Hot4Ice
and AAU (including the AAU Junior Olympics), players must
register
with AAU (also, coaches
must register with AAU). When registering
with AAU, enter Mad Dogs Hockey as the Club Name and leave
the Club Code blank. To play at ECHO and Coastal Cup events,
players and coaches must register
with USA Hockey Inline. To play in events
sponsored by Tour Cup Series, NARCH, TORHS, and State
Wars, players and coaches must register
with the Roller Hockey Alliance.
The fees for these registrations are fairly
nominal and some organizations allow for less expensive
"weekend warrior" registrations, which are useful
if the team is not competing in other events sponsored
by that organization.
REMEMBER: ALL DATES ARE SUBJECT
TO CHANGE, SO CHECK WITH THE TOURNAMENT/TRYOUT SPONSOR
IN MAKING YOUR PLANS.
