Mad
Dog Tournament Record for the 2005 season

Thomas Troy Taylor
1966-2005

The Mad Dog Inline Hockey Club would like to
pay tribute to long time roller hockey coach Troy
Taylor. Troy was involved in a fatal accident
on September 8th in Middleburg as a result of
colliding with a truck. He leaves behind his wonderful
wife Pam and two sons, Colt and Connor.
Troy and his family were deeply involved in roller
hockey in the region, having been associated with
the Loudoun Roller Hockey League, the Shenandoah
Inline League, the Mad Dogs Inline Club, and the
Thunder inline program. He was a fine coach and
a great father. We will miss him greatly and we
ask everyone to pray for his family.
There will be a memorial service for him this
coming Friday at 5 PM at Goodstone Inn & Estate,
36205 Snake Hill Rd., Middleburg, VA 20117. His
wife, Pam, has invited all Mad Dogs to attend.
She would like for them to wear their
Mad Dog jerseys.
Also a fund has been established by
friends of the family to help Pam pay for the
education costs of their two sons. Checks can
be made out to the Troy Taylor Memorial Fund and
mailed to Middleburg Bank at P.O. Box 5, Middleburg,
VA 20118.
Here is where he spent most of his working life:

second place at the Susquehanna Sports Center

'90 Mad Dogs
The Mad Dog's 14U 1990 team took second place at the
Susquehanna Sports Centers 4th Annual Summer Showdown
tournament. The team traveled to Lemoyne, PA for this
one day tournament on Sunday, 21 August. The Maddogs
won their first two games against the Susquehanna Lunatics
and Washingtonville Wolves and then in the third game
tied the Monroe Crusaders. In the semi-final round the
Maddogs defeated the Potomac Mavericks. The championship
round was a closely contested game with the Maddogs
again competing against the Crusaders losing 3 –
4.
Eight Mad Dog
Teams Compete at the USA Hockey Inline Nationals; Seven
make it to the Final Four
Well, it was somewhat discouraging to see so many Mad
Dog teams make it to the semi-finals or the finals and
then fall short of the Gold Medal. You would think the
odds would be that one team would bring home the Gold
but for some reason the stars did not line up properly
for us this year.
The '96 team lost 3-1 in a heartbreak game in the finals
to the Tour Breakaway with Goalie Scott Waters playing
the best game of his career. Tour Breakaway is sponsored
by the Tour hockey gear company and attracts players
from all over the North East. Of the five players named
to the All-Tournament team, three were Mad Dogs: Chris
Berry, Brian Romola, and goalie Scotty Waters. Also,
the '96 Mad Dogs swept every event at the skill competition.
The '95 team also lost 5-4 in a close final to the Richmond
Rattlers. Named to the All-Tournament team were Mad
Dog's Charlie Shepard and Devin Brink.
Not to be repetitious, but the '94 team also lost in
the final by one goal, 4-3, to the Cougars, a team they
had previously defeated 4-2. The Mad Dogs were ahead
most of the game but got careless the last five minutes.
Once again, the Mad Dogs dominated the All-Tournament
team selections winning 3 of 5 spots: David Brobst,
Trevor Herrinton, and goalie Eugene Rose. Rose had the
best goalie average in the tournament.
The '93 team played in the U12 lower division and was
eliminated early on by the Piranhas. This team was plagued
by missing and injured players.
The '92 team placed third and were eliminated in the
semi-finals by the Philly Revolution 3-2, a team they
had previously defeated. The ’92 team dominated
in every category: most goals scored, best goalie average,
leading scorer, etc, but choked in the semis. Most notably,
they defeated the Prince William Panthers 9-1. Two of
its players were selected to the All-Tournament team:
Charles Baldwin and goalie Andy Baker. Baldwin also
won the overall skills contest.
The '90 team placed 4th, losing 7-3 to East Fishkill
in the semi-finals. Pedro Perella led the entire tournament
in scoring and was selected to the All-Tournament team.
The U14 Blue team placed 3rd, losing 3-2 in overtime
in the semi-finals to Wesco. Craig Kitto was second
in scoring in the tournament and was selected to the
All-Tournament team.
The '89 team placed 3rd in the 17U division and were
by far the youngest team in a division dominated by
'88 and '87 players. They were eliminated 2-1 by Wellington
in the quarterfinals. However, they did finished ahead
of our cross-town rival Prince William Panthers.
In summary, the Mad Dog Inline Hockey Club entered 8
teams in the USA Hockey Inline Nationals and three of
them placed 2nd, three placed 3rd, and one team placed
4th. Overall, not a bad record and no other inline club
from our region had any kind of a record like this,
but come next year it will be our turn to bring home
the Gold in every age division!
Five Mad Dogs
Play for Team USA in International Competition
For two weeks last July, five Mad Dogs
participated in international inline hockey competition
in both Detroit and New Orleans. This is the most Mad
Dogs ever selected by Team USA in our club history.
The USA Team is so dominate in inline hockey as compared
to the rest of the world that the Jr. Olympic Committee
divided up the US team into four regional teams: West,
South, East, and North. Other countries that participated
included Spain, Mexico, Great Britain, Australia, New
Zealand, and Canada. In order to play for one of the
US teams, players must be invited to a tryout camp where
they go through three grueling days of scrimmages. Around
160 players were invited to the four regional camps
and 12-14 players are selected by each team.
The competition in Detroit was called
the “World Cup” is sanctioned by the US
Olympic Committee and the AAU. At the U10 level, Mad
Dog Nick Buck played for Team USA South which won the
Gold Medal. At the U12 level, Mad Dogs Joe Duquette
played for Team USA East which placed third. Mad Dogs
Justin Lucus and Charles Baldwin were selected by Team
USA South which won the Silver Medal. At the U16 level,
Mad Dog Andrew Willet played for Team USA South which
won the Gold Medal. All five Mad Dogs played hard and
represented their country well. The Mad Dog organization
is very proud of them.
Mad Dogs ’92 Team participate
in TORHS Nationals
The ’92 Mad Dog team attended the
very elite TORHS national championship in Detroit and
finished 6tth. TORHS is the most elite of all inline
tournaments and nearly all the teams in attendance are
fully sponsored, play year round, and attract players
from many states. The Mad Dogs were the only non-sponsored
community-based team to finish in the final 6 at TORHS.
The highlight of the Mad Dog effort was the elimination
of TMD – Team Mission Detroit – which is
one of the top teams in the world and is sponsored by
the Mission Hockey company. It was quite a pleasure
to watch the Mad Dogs in their mismatched hockey pants
and plain jerseys defeat a team with matching helmets,
gloves, pants, etc. The Mad Dogs were eliminated by
Team Black Ice which then went on to win the gold medal.

Mad Dogs
On June 24-26, 2005, the 95 Mad Dogs swept
through all five of its games on the way to winning
the AAU/USARS National Championship tournament at the
Carolina Sportsplex in Morrisville, North Carolina.
Playing in the 10U Competitive Division, the 95 Mad
Dogs went up against teams that primarily consisted
of older players born in 1994. Although the Mad Dogs
started several games slowly, they fought hard and rallied
to win every game. In winning the gold medal after last
year’s second place finish at the national championships,
the 95 Mad Dogs have firmly established themselves as
one of the nation’s premier inline hockey teams
at its age level.
In the first game of the tournament, against
the Dragons White team from nearby Apex, North Carolina,
the teams remained within one goal of each other for
much of the game, but the Mad Dogs poured it on in the
second period and ended up winning 7-2. The second game
of the tournament against the very physical Detroit
Wildcats was also a nail-biter, but the Mad Dogs eventually
prevailed 5-2. In the third game against a Virginia
rival, the 94 Richmond Rattlers White team, things looked
bleak as the Mad Dogs fell behind 3-0 early in the game.
The Mad Dogs finally woke up and chipped away at the
Rattler’s lead to tie the score at 3-3 on a goal
by Charlie Shepard, and then took a 4-3 lead with six
minutes remaining in the game on a one-timer by Daniel
Fritz as he was falling down. The Rattlers tied the
score at 4-4 but the Mad Dogs pulled out an exciting
5-4 win when Ian Jonesi crashed the net and knocked
in a rebound for a goal in the last 30 seconds of the
game, earning the Mad Dogs the top seed in the playoff
round.
In the semi-final against the Dragons
White team, the dominant offensive play of forwards
Trevor Mack, Evan Owens, Julian Cronan, Daniel Fritz,
and Charlie Shepard allowed the Mad Dogs to win handily,
9-1, setting up a rematch with the Richmond Rattlers,
this time for all the marbles. In the championship game,
the Mad Dogs scored the first goal, but the Rattlers
bounced back with two quick tallies. A blistering slapshot
by Mad Dog forward Daniel Fritz tied the score at 2-2,
but the Rattlers answered with another goal to take
a 3-2 lead. Charlie Shepard tied the score at 3-3 on
a pass from Kevin McDonald and then Kevin McDonald scored
the game-winning 4th goal, amazingly while falling down
in the high slot. The stellar Mad Dogs defense of Kevin
McDonald, Devin Brink, Justin Mendoza, Nicky Grose,
and Ian Jonesi shut down the Rattlers from there, and
Charlie Shepard added an insurance goal to make the
final score 5-3.
Six Mad Dogs players made the All Tournament
Team: Goalie Joey Pappagallo, Forwards Daniel Fritz
and Charlie Shepard, and Defensemen Kevin McDonald,
Devin Brink, and Ian Jonesi.
Mad Dog '88 team
placed 2nd at NARCH regional
The '88 Mad Dog team played at the highest
level this past weekend, participating at the NARCH
regional in Broomall, PA. Along with TORHS, NARCH is
consider the most competitive inline circuit.
The team went all the way to the finals, losing 3-2
in a heartbreak loss. One of the goals socred by their
opponents deflected off a Mad Dog skate.
In addition to placing 2nd, Mad Dogs Augie Gardner and
Brad Pryor were both selected to the NARCH all-star
team.

& '91 Mad Dogs
Congrats to all Mad Dog teams on a great showing at
the first major tournament based at our home rink. All
11 Mad Dog teams participated in the USA Hockey Inline
regional qualifier.
Of the four age brackets, Mad Dog teams took the Gold
in two of them and placed second in the other two. The
'94 U10 Mad Dogs lost in a heartbreak final 3-1 to a
Richmond Rattler team they've defeated many times before.
The '92 U12 Mad Dog destroyed its opposition garnering
3 shutouts in route to a final victory over the Prince
Williams Panthers.
The U14 Blue Mad Dog team, defeated our own '91 Mad
Dog team in a very close 3-2 game and then went on to
defeat the '90 Mad Dog team in the final 5-3.
In the U17 bracket, the '88 Mad Dogs defeated the '89
Mad Dogs in the semis and then went on to lose in the
final 5-1 to the Richmond Rattlers 5-1.
In summary, the Rattlers won two age brackets and the
Mad Dogs won two, but the Rattlers did not have any
2nd place finishes while the Mad Dogs had two. Overall,
the Mad Dog club had by far the best overall showing.
Our younger years teams, such as the '95, '93, '91,
'89 teams all played well against teams dominated by
older players. Both of our "Blue" teams --U12
and U14 -- played exceptional and even though there
was not an 8U bracket, our U8 team, the "Mad Puppies"
held there own against teams that had players, in some
cases, 4 years older then them!
'95 Mad Dogs Win the Gold at
Richmond AAU regional
A very competitive AAU regional was held
in Richmond on June 4th and the only Mad Dog team attending
the tourney, the '95 team coached by Peter Grose, won
the Gold medal. The team had two shutouts against teams
dominated by '94 players. In the finals, they faced
the '94 Richmond Rattlers whom they had previously lost
to 4-1. In the third period, the Mad Dogs were down
3 to 2 and with just over a minute left they pulled
their goalie. With 28 seconds remaining, Devin Brink
scored the game tying goal to make it 3 to 3, thereby
setting up a 5 minute overtime. Right off the face-off,
Charlie Shepard took the puck down un-assisted to score
the game winning goal 9 seconds into overtime!
Top Forward was awarded to Charlie Shepard
and Nicky Grose received the Top Defenseman award. Julian
Cronan was also awarded All-
Tournament Honors.

Mad Dogs
The '93 and '94 Mad Dog teams hounded all opponents
into submission at the June 4th Next Tier tournament
even though both teams played in the 12U division dominated
by birth year '92 players. The most competitive matches
of the tournament were the two games in which the '93
Mad Dogs faced the '94 Mad Dogs. The finals featured
the '93 vs. the '94 Mad Dogs and the '94 team prevailed
4-3. '93 Mad Dog Alex Grose was named
the tournament's Most Valuable Offenseman due to the
28 points he garnered and Parker Delaney was named most
Valuable Defenseman.
In the U17 division, the U14 Blue Mad Dog team also
took the Gold by defeating the U17 Winchester Eagles
9-1 in the championship game. The team earlier defeated
the Central Virginia Sabres who played exceptionally
dirty. Jeremy Davis was name tournament MVP and Brian
Karanakis was named Best Goalie with a 87% save percentage.

At the May 21-22 AAU regional, younger
year Mad Dog teams dominated their age brackets in 3
of the 4 divisions. In the 10U division, the ’95
Mad Dogs defeated the ’95 Richmond Rattlers in
an exciting 7-6 win to win the Gold medal. In the 12U
division, the ’93 Mad Dog team defeated the Richmond
Rattlers black team 9-2 in the final. In the 14U Division,
the ’91 Mad Dog team defeated the nationally–ranked
Greensboro Generals 7-6, handed the Generals the first
loss of the season. In the 16U division, the ’89
Mad Dogs placed 3rd, losing to teams dominated by ’88
and ’87 players. Congrats to all the Mad Dogs
teams for an excellent showing!
'92
Mad Dogs Place at TORHS Regional

Making the first Mad Dog appearance at the very elite
TORHS regionals in several years, the '92 team place
3rd and competed well against some of the best 12U teams
in the nation. The Mad Dogs defeated the Richmond Rattlers,
Tied the Philly Revolution, and lost in the finals 4-0
to Tour Breakaway. Tour Breakaway is sponsored by the
Tour Hockey company and recruits players from a half
dozen states. They are consistently ranked as one of
the best clubs in the nation. The play was very rough
and fast, as TORHS allows limited checking along the
boards. The boys played their hearts out and kept within
2 goals of Tour Breakaway for 90% of the game.
Mad
Dog player makes the Jr National Inline team
Mad Dog '88 team member Augie Gardner made the Jr National
Inline team which they've broken into 4 regions. On
June 3-5, the four regional teams will be playing each
other at the new inline rink in Waldorf, MD, not that
far from where most of us live. For those of you who
want to check out the best junior inline players in
the nation and check out a beautiful new inline rink,
this might be a fun thing to do.

NARCH
is considered the most prestigious inline hockey tournament
series in the world and this year was the first time
the Mad Dogs have fielded teams in each age division
at the NARCH regional.

NARCH1st
Place Medal
After a 5-5 tie and one overtime, the '92 Mad Dog team
won the shootout and thus the Gold Medal, the first
Mad Dog team to win a NARCH regional in many years.
The '96 team placed 2nd, losing to a very strong Richmond
Rattler team in the finals. In the very competitive
14U division, the '90 Mad Dog team placed 4th. Two other
Mad
Dog teams participated -- the '91 and '89 teams -- but
with both teams being the "younger year" teams
in their divisions, they kept pace with many of the
teams but didn't place high. All and all, it was a great
experience for all Mad Dog teams.

the Garden’s Ice House in Laurel and once again,
the Mad Dog teams were dominant. The ’96 team
– missing 3 key players – placed 2nd, losing
in the final to the Richmond Rattlers even though they
had previously beaten them. The ’94 and ’95
Mad Dog teams both ended up in the 10U final with the
’94 team placing 1st. In the 12U division, two
Mad Dog teams also ended up in the finals with the ’92
team placing 1st over the 12U Blue team. There were
two brackets in the 14U bracket and the 14U Blue Mad
Dog team won the gold in the lower division. In their
first tournament outing, the ’88 Mad Dog team
soundly won the 17U division winning most of their games
with a mercy. The ’89 Mad Dog team placed 3rd.
Mad
Dogs ’89 Place 2nd at USA Hockey Inline Regional
The
first USA Hockey Inline regional of the year occurred
on April 15-17 at Broomall, PA and the Mad Dogs were
represented by two teams. The ’89 Mad Dog team
placed 2nd in the 17U division dominated by ’88
and ’87 players. The very young ’95 team
placed 4th in a 10U division dominated by ‘94s
but still managed to defeat the ’94 Richmond Rattler
team which ultimately won the tournament.
