Mad Dog Tournament
Results for the 2007 Season
Summary:
Once again, the Mad Dogs asserted
their dominance as the leading inline hockey
club in the region and one of the leading clubs
on the East Coast. The most notable track
record must go to the Mad Dog Mites, who clinched
two National titles. Right behind them
one would have to say it was the ’92 team.
This team won every regional – two of
them a division up – and placed 2nd and
4th in the Elite Division at two different nationals.

U12 Team USA South Wins
Gold at the International Division of the Junior
Olympics!

The U12 Team USA South
team was the only Team USA team to win GOLD
at the recent Jr. Olympics International tournament.
This is the World Cup of roller hockey. Canada
won every other boys division (U10, U14, U16
& U18).
Mad Dogs Ian Jonesi and Derek
Guzik were members of this team.
The other players hailed from the Richmond Rattlers
and Mission Team Carolina. The event
took place in Detroit and the team defeated Great
Britain, Canada, Team USA East, Team USA North,
and then Team USA West 2-1 in the finals.

Mad
Dogs Create Stir at 2HOT4ICE National Championships!
June 21st thru June 24th

For the first time ever, the
Mad Dog Club decided to send teams to the
2HOT4Ice national championships in Raleigh,
NC. The U8 team, the '96 Mad Dogs and
the '92 team all attended this event.
The U8s played against some
of the best Mite teams in the country and ended
up winning the National title for the Silver
Division. Their preference was to play
in the Gold Division but due to a decision
by tournament organizers to make the "Goals
Against" stat a higher priority than the
"Head to Head" statistic, the
Mites ended up in the Silver Division.
Meanwhile, a team soundly defeated by the Mad
Dogs was moved up to the Gold Division.
Very strange. Nonetheless, with three '99s
on the team, winning the national Silver
Division title was a great accomplishment.
In the U10 division, the '96
team opted to play in the Silver Division and
went undefeated for the entire tournament. This
team had some '97 Mad Dogs on its roster so
it was a young team. The Mad
Dogs 96 goalie, Trey Kovalick, won the "Best
Goalie" award and Mad Dog Chris Berry won
the "Dishman" award for most
assists.
In the U14 Platinum Division,
the '92 Mad Dogs went undefeated until the final
game, losing in overtime to Phat Tape, a team
they had previously defeated. It was a
real heartbreak, but the Mad Dogs did sweep
all the individual awards: Most Assists
award was given to Peter Wydler; the Most
Points award was won by Charles Baldwin and
the Best Goalie award was earned by Andy Baker.
Overall, the Mad Dogs conducted
themselves well and we received lots of compliments
about the club. Winning two national Silver
Division titles and a second place in the
Platinum Division is a performance we can
all be proud of.

What An Unbelievable
Upset!
June 15th thru 17th

To defeat the U16 Team
Breakaway team in the final 4-3 has to be one
of greatest upsets in Mad Dog history! ECHO
Regional tournament 2007.

Six
Mad Dogs Land Spots on National U18 Teams

Mad Dogs Brad Pryor, Augie Gardner,
Nick Peters, Brett Boss, and Spencer Becker
were selected to serve on one of two U18
Minor teams while Taylor Witt was selected to
be on the U18 Major team. These
teams are organized by the AAU and will play
against national teams from other countries.
The fact that Mad Dogs are landing more spots
on the U18 National teams than any other club
is evidence that the Mad Dogs are now being
recognized as one of the leading inline clubs
in the East. Congratulations to all the
boys!
Former
Professional Inline Player takes over as Coach
of U18 and Jr. Mad Dog Teams

The Mad Dogs are pleased to
announce that Michael Nolan has been named the
new coach of the U18 and Jr. Mad Dog teams.
Born and raised in New Jersey, Michael started
playing ice hockey at age 3 and ended up playing
travel ice hockey for the Little Flyers and
then the Junior Flyers. He started playing
roller hockey at age 12 for the 99ers club in
New Jersey. This team won 10 National
Championships at NARCH and at the now defunct
AIRHS. When the RHI professional inline
league began, Michael was picked up by the Philadelphia
Bulldogs and also played semi-pro with the Blue
Diamond team in the PIHA League. He has
been coached by some of the best inline players
in the country, including CJ Yoder, Todd Melton,
Bob Kelly(ex-flyer), and Ron Tracey. Michael
is on active duty with the Air Force and lives
in Alexandria. Welcome aboard Michael!
Mad
Dogs Mites Win National Coastal Cup Championships!

The 8U Mad Dogs Participated
at the Coastal Cup Nationals at Apex NC, May
18-20. Our Mad Dogs team played in the Gold/Silver
Division, the highest division during round
robin play. The team started on Saturday
morning against the Home team DSC Dragons which
the team tied 6-6. The next game was against
CCH Blue, which the Mad Dogs soundly defeated
11-3, and the last round robin game was against
the Richmond Rattlers. The Mad Dogs defeated
them 7-1 to close out round robin play on
Saturday undefeated with 2 wins and a tie to
finish as top seed due to the second to
last tie breaker (goals scored) for the
playoff run.
The Semi Final winner would
advance to the Gold Final, with the loser playing
for the Silver final. The Mad Dogs semi
final was against the CCH Blue team again
and the Mad Dogs mercied them this time 9-1
to advance to the Gold Division Championship
Game. In the Gold Division Final it was our
Mad Dogs against the team that they had tied
the day before, the hosting team DSC Dragons.
The game was never in doubt as the entire Mad
Dogs team stepped up and triumphed over
the DSC Dragons 6-1 to win the Gold Division
National Championship. Robbie "Kamikaze"
Baldwin took all tournament team honors and
won the Sniper Skills Competition. Jake "the
Mouth" Herslow also took all tournament
team honors and lost only by 1 goal in the goalie
part of the skills competition!

Mad Dogs
Nearly Sweep AAU Regional in Centreville

1994 Mad Dogs Champs
at the AAU Regional - Centreville, VA

1995 Mad Dogs Finalists
at the AAU Regional - Centreville, VA
The U18 team dominated their division
by defeating the Pittsburgh Bandits 7-2 in the
final. In the U16 Division, the Mad Dogs
were represented by the '92 Mad Dog team,
which decided to play an entire bracket. The
'92s won in a stunning upset over the Richmond
Rattlers 5-1 in the U16, Division II final.
In the U14 Division, the Mad Dogs were represented
by the our U14 Blue team which placed an honorable
2nd place, losing 5-2 to a Bandit team.
In the U12 division, we had
a family squabble as the '94 Mad Dogs defeated
the '95 Mad Dogs 4-3 to win the U12 Division
in what was perhaps the most competitive game
of the whole tournament. A
similar thing happened in the U10 Division as
the final two teams in this division were the '97
and '96 Mad Dogs. Rather than playing
late Sunday night however, the AAU director
allowed the two Mad Dog teams to play each other
in two weeks at a more convenient time.

Mad
Dogs Convert the Slapshotz into the DOGPOUND!
Congratulations
to the '92 Mad Dogs for taking first place at
the 2HOT4ICE Tournament held on May 12, 2007
in Fredericksburg!

The Mad Dogs entered the 2HOT4ICE
regional in force this weekend with 7 teams participating.
In the U8 division, the Mad Pups defeated the Richmond
Rattlers 4-1 in the final. In the U10
division, the '96 Mad Dog team hounded the Sabers
into submission 6-2 in the final to capture
the Gold. Capturing both the Silver and
Gold brackets of the U14 Division was the '93 and
'92 Mad Dogs. The '93s won the final over
the Rattlers 4-0 and the '92s won the championship
by beating a very tough Team Breakaway team
3-1. Four teams brought home the Gold,
not bad for a weekend.
Congratulations
to the '96 Mad Dogs for taking first place at
the 2HOT4ICE Tournament held on May 13, 2007
in Fredericksburg!

The team's first game came bright and early
on Sunday at 6:00am. They played the home rink
team, the Central VA Sabers, in their first
game and won with allot of team play, passing,
and excellent goal tending. The next game was
against the U-8 Richmond Rattlers. This was
a tough game. Even though this team was made
up of 8 and 9 year olds, they gave our ‘96ers
a run for our money. The boys played hard,
but they managed to end the game with a tie,
1-1. The 12:00pm game was against the Potomac
Mavericks. Going into this game, they had to
win the game AND not let the Mavericks score
more than one goal to guarantee skipping the
seed 2 and 3 game and going straight to the
championship game. The boys came out swinging
and played a fast and hard game against the
Mavericks winning the game while Trey and his
teammates kept the Mavericks from scoring.
The ’96 Mad Dogs played the Central VA
Sabres again in the championship game. Even
though they won the first game against them,
the Sabres came out fighting! The Sabres scored
first and the Mad Dogs came back and scored
two goals, followed by a Sabre goal to tie up
the game 2-2. During the third period the boys
went on a rampage and kept the Sabres from scoring
any more goals and scored 5 more goals themselves
putting the final score at 7-2!
Twenty-three
Mad Dogs Selected for the
Virginia State Wars team

Tryouts for the Virginia State
Inline team occurred this past weekend at The
Box Inline rink. Over two hundred hockey
players from all over Virginia tried out
for birth year teams in almost every category.
The Mad Dogs once again dominated the selection
process.
The '96 Virginia Team chose Max
Guidry and Nick Jones. The '97 team selected
Jack Klerekoper, Robert Limoges, and Garrett
Forrest in the net. Mad Dogs Nicky
Grose, Trevor Mack, Kade Krause, and goalie
Dani Hannan were picked by the '95 team.
The organizers created two teams
for both the '92 and '93 teams, with the top
team competing in the very competitive
AA/AAA bracket. The '93 Mad Dogs making the
top team were Alex Grose, Eric Baldwin, and
Mad Dog alternate Adam Ware.
The '92s who were chosen were Peter Wydler,
Min Yoon, Justin Lucus, Charles Baldwin, Seve
Cordova, Tony Cordova and Mad Dog alternate
Sam Stone.
In the U16 division, Kyle Weitzman
and John Loveland were chosen for the '91 while
Brett Boss and Tyler Berkey made the '90 team.
Congrats to all!
Mad
Dog Teams Victorious at ECHO & USA Inline
Regional
The Mad Dog U16
team took the Gold at the USA Hockey/NARCH regional
in Waldorf, winning a close 2-1 game over the
Maryland Thrashers, a new team based at the
Waldorf rink. In the U14 division, the
undefeated '92 Mad Dog team beat the Maryland
Thrashers in back to back mercies, winning the
finals 10-1.
At the ECHO regional
in Fredericksburg, the '95 Mad Dog team out
played a strong '95 Rattler '95 but lost
in the finals. In the Mite division, the '98
Mad Dog team took home the Gold medal.

Mad Dogs Selected for National Inline Teams
The U10 and U12 National Inline
teams were selected last weekend (March 24-25)
after a rigorous tryout camp. The U10
team selected Mad Dogs Christopher Berry, Garrett
Forrest, Max Guidry, Nick Jones, and Alex Limoges.
The U12 Team selected Mad Dogs Derek Guzik and
Ian Jonesi. Congratulations! The club
is proud of you!
Mad Dogs
Perform Well at First Tournament of the Season
Despite the fact that many Mad
Dogs have been on their inline skates only once
in nine months, five Mad Dogs teams performed
well at the AAU regional at the Box inline rink.
In the U8 Division, the Mad Dog Mite team placed
2nd, with Mad Dog goalie Jake Herslow and forward
Robby Baldwin winning All-Tournament honors.

In their first
event of the 2007season, the U10 Mad Dogs made
their mark, playing impressively enough to reach
the championship in the AAU Regional Tournament
held at The Box on March 24th. In the
final game, the Mad Dogs faced off against the
Richmond Rattlers to whom they'd lost 4-1 in
pool play. This time, a spectacular effort by
the entire team took the game into overtime
before the Rattlers prevailed 3-2.
In the U12 Division, the Mad
Dog ’94 team did not participate but our
two ’95 teams did. Due to the large
number of teams, there were two U12 divisions
created. The ’95 White team
lost in the semi-finals by one goal to the Richmond
Rattlers. Nicky Grose was named to the
All-Tournament team.
The ’95 Blue team won
the other division over the Rattlers 4-2!
Selected to the All-tournament team was Goalie
Garrett Forrest (named All-tournament in two
different age divisions!) and skaters Drew Schneider,
Ian Jonesi and top scorer Jamie Cooper.
In the U14 Division, the ’92
Mad Dogs did not participate but the ’93
team held its own against mostly ’92 teams.
The ’93s lost in the semi-finals to the
DC Elite, an all-’92 team composed of
Tier 1 ice hockey players from the Statesmen
team and Ashburn Xtreme. The ’93
team led much of the game but lost 4-3.
All and all, a respectable
performance for our first outing.
