U12 Team Takes Silver at 2Hot4Ice Nationals

On June 26-28, 2009, the U12 Mad Dogs shined en route to a silver medal in the highest level of competition (the Platinum Division) at the 2Hot4Ice National Championships held at the Dream Sports Center in Apex (Raleigh), North Carolina. The U12s lost only one of its four round robin games, tying the always tough Team Carolina squad 2-2, beating the Carolina Tsunami 6-1 and the Carolina Fusion 97s by a 4-2 margin, and then fell short in the championship game to the Richmond Rattlers. In addition to great team play, the U12 Mad Dogs had five skaters who took 1st or 2nd place in the individual Skills Competition, Charlie Berry, Logan Nasr, Kyle Eng, Luke Benitez, and Tyler Folts. Kudos also went to Alex DeYoung for having the Best Save Percentage by a 12U Goalie and to Jack Klerekoper for Most Goals and Assists by a 12U player. Great job guys!

Mad Dogs Face Fierce Foes in Feasterville

On May 16-17, 2009, eight very competitive U16 teams participated in an Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) regional tournament at the Feasterville Sportsplex near Philadelphia. Other than the Mad Dogs, all the teams hailed from from Pennsylvania and New Jersey, a hotbed of elite inline teams. The Mad Dogs '92 team lost two very close round robin games and, thus, ended up qualifying for the lower bracket playoffs. The '92s faced Tour Breakaway in the championship game and tied it at 2-2, forcing an overtime. Gordy Bonnel scored in overtime, sealing the gold medal for the '92s.

The U10 Mad Dogs also entered the regional tournament looking for some stiff competition and they were not disappointed. The U10s faced great competition in round robin play from Feasterville's own "Mission Assault" team, New Jersey's "Flash" and central New Jersey's "Howell Hawks." The Mad Dogs showed the Mission Assault what Virginia hockey is all about with a sound 8-1 total team victory in which every Mad Dog scored a goal or recorded an assist. The Mad Dogs then came up against some awesome speed against the Flash, who jumped to a 3-0 first period lead. However, the Mad Dogs showed a lot of heart and battled back to end the contest at a 3-3 tie. Up next was the Howell Hawks, who also jumped off to a 3-0 lead. The Mad Dogs battled back, but eventually fell in the waning minutes by a score of 5-3. The U10s missed participating in the championship game by means of the 4th tie breaker: goals scored. The Flash recorded a total of 15 goals to the Mad Dogs 14. It was a great weekend. The U10 Mad Dogs showed great character by battling back and trusting in team play. Great Job guys!

Mad Dogs Check the Right Box in Chantilly

On May 2-3, 2009, the ‘93 Mad Dogs won the U16 TORHS Regional championships at The Box Inline Hockey rink in Chantilly, Virginia, while the U8 Mad Dogs remained undefeated this season and also took home a gold medal. The ‘92 Mad Dogs team earned the U16 silver medal in its championship game loss to the younger ‘93 Mad Dogs team, and the ‘94 and ‘95 Mad Dogs teams played hard but fell short in their bids to qualify for the U12 championship game. The '95s beat the '94s by a 7-5 score, but then played much of their remaining games shorthanded, as they were penalized often while trying to adjust to the TORHS style of hockey, which allows significant body contact just short of checking (unlike a more finesse non-contact style allowed in AAU and most other tournaments).

The red hot U8 team kept up its blemish-free season with 4-1 and 8-2 round robin wins over the Richmond Rattler Black team, 5-1 and 3-2 wins over the Richmond Rattlers Orange team, and a convincing 6-1 win over the Rattlers Orange team in the championship game. Kevin Rose was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the U8 division and Austin Callens was named the U8 Most Valuable Goalie (MVG).

The ‘93 Mad Dogs, last year’s AAU Junior Olympics national champions, lost its opening round robin game to the ‘92 Mad Dogs, but beat the Potomac Mavericks and the Mad Dogs U16 Blue team to qualify for the championship game, a rematch against the ‘92 Mad Dogs. In the championship, the ‘93s took a 1-0 lead but three unanswered goals by the ‘92s put the ‘93s back on their heels. The ‘92s third goal sparked a second wind from the ‘93s, who then dominated the scoring and closed out a 6-4 upset.

Thirty-Eight Former and Current Mad Dogs Selected by Elite Travel Ice Hockey Teams

The smoke has cleared over the tryouts for Virginia's premier travel ice hockey club, and 35 current or former Mad Dogs were selected to play next season for the Washington Junior Nationals, Washington Junior Capitals, or Washington Little Capitals teams. Also, three current Mad Dogs were selected to play for the Team Maryland elite AAA travel ice hockey program. Many players from these clubs go on to play for top college teams and even professionally.

On the roster of the Jr. Nationals -- the region's premier Jr. A team -- are eight former and current Mad Dogs: Bill Bock, Joe Duquette, Alex Guerere, Pat Kerbuski, Max Lorenzen, Chris Merrick, Chase Ainesworth, and Patrick Salkind.

Dominating the Jr. Capitals roster are Mad Dogs alumni Brian Bock, Tony Cordova, Seve Cordova and Dylan Talbot, in addition to current Mad Dogs Justin Lucus, Min Yoon, Tanner Jones, Brent Lafayette, and Alex Clark.

The U16 Little Caps roster features former Mad Dogs Tom Cyrnak and Peter Veltri, along with current Mad Dogs Adam Ware, Connor Meike, and Julian Kell. The U14 Little Caps roster includes current Mad Dogs Devin Brink, Julian Cronan, Kevin McDonald, Justin Mendoza and Charlie Shepard. Former Mad Dogs Tanner Cochran and Grant Dickinson also made the squad. Former Mad Dogs goalie T.J. Hollen and current Mad Dog Logan Nasr were selected for the U13 Little Caps roster. The U12 Little Caps roster includes former Mad Dogs Alex Limoges, Nick Haeff, and Garrett Forest, while current Mad Dogs Trent Denuccio and Chace Shepard are on the roster for the U10 squad, the youngest Little Caps team.

Selected for Team Maryland's AAA U16 squad next season were Sam Buck, Max Greenwald, and Chris Stauffer. This team promises to be one of the strongest AAA U16 teams in the east next season. Buck, Greenwald, and Stauffer currently play for the Mad Dogs '94 team.

Congratulations to all the former and current Mad Dogs

Mad Dogs Shots Echo Throughout Winchester

On April 18-19, 2009, three Mad Dogs teams competed in the East Coast Hockey Organization (ECHO) Regional Championships at the Sportsplex in Winchester, Virginia, and, when all the results were in, the Mad Dogs came home with two gold medals and one silver. The U8 and U10 teams went undefeated in contests against the Richmond Rattlers, and the U16 Blue team beat the eventual champion Richmond Rattler Black team and the Maryland Thrashers before being edged out by the Rattlers Black team in the championship game by a razor-thin 2-1 margin. Keep racking up those medals guys!

Mad Dogs Open Fire in Winchester

On the weekend of March 27-29, 2009, the Mad Dogs opened their 2009 season on a high note when seven Mad Dogs teams competed in the Coastal Cup Regional Tournament at the Sportsplex in Kernstown (Winchester), Virginia, and four teams came home with medals. Highest honors went to the Mad Dogs '95 White team led by Head Coach Marc Cronan, who went undefeated and won the 14U Gold Division championship. The Mad Dogs '94 (14U) and 12U teams won Silver Division championships and the 10U team took second place, while in the 16U bracket the '92 team (who earlier tied eventual champion Team Carolina) took third place and the '93 team placed fourth.

The '95 White team began the tournament in a civil war against their '94 Mad Dogs brethren. The '95s took an early 1-0 lead, but the '94s struck back with three unanswered goals and it looked like the older Mad Dogs had unstoppable momentum. The '95s refused to wilt and ultimately tied the score at 3-3 despite being short-handed for significant stretches, including a long two-man advantage for the '94s. The game ended in a 3-3 tie, and both teams still had high hopes for making it to the upper (Gold) division playoffs. The '95s then beat their long-time rival, the always-tough Richmond Rattlers ('94/'95 Orange) team, by a 5-1 margin, and then in a workmanlike manner they took care of Team Carolina by a 9-5 score. The '95s won their final round robin game against the Mad Dogs 14U Blue team by an 8-1 tally and advanced to the Gold Division championship game as the top seed out of the five 14U teams. The championship was a rematch against the Richmond Rattlers, and in this Second Battle of Kernstown the Rattlers kept it close the entire game. With less than a minute to go, the Rattlers pulled their goalie to try and close a 2-1 deficit, but '95 Mad Dog Nicky Grose stole the puck at mid-rink and sealed the victory for the Mad Dogs with an empty net goal. Goalie Dani Hannan won most valuable 14U Mad Dog player for the tournament.

Tryout times on February 20th:

U8 Team ('00, '01) - 6:30 p.m.
U10 Team ('98, '99) - 6:30 p.m.
U12 Team ('96, '97) -7:30 p.m.
'95 Team (U14) - no tryouts
U14 Team ('94, '95) - 7:30 p.m.
'93 Team (U16) - 10:30 p.m.
'92 Team ('U16) - no tryouts

U18 Team ('90, '91) - 10:30 p.m.
U21 Team ('87, '88, '89) - no tryouts

The tryout procedures & registration form are at: http://www.maddogshockey.com/tryouts.html

Note that although the '95 Team is not having a tryout, any interested '95 or '94 players may try out for the U14 Team, which is expected to be a very strong team (i.e., this is not a "B" team). Note also that the ’92 Team is not having tryouts but is looking for one or perhaps two additional elite-level players. If interested, contact Steve Baldwin at scbaldwin@comcast.net. The U21 Team also is not having a tryout. Anyone interested in playing for the U21 Team should contact Sandy Witt at redroc26@aol.com.

We are aware that there are Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey League (NVSHL) high school ice hockey playoffs early in the evening on February 20th, which is why we scheduled the U16 and U18 tryouts late in the evening (at 10:30 p.m.). If a U14 player wants to come to tryouts but has a conflict with an NVSHL playoff game, he can come to the 10:30 p.m. session by contacting Steve Baldwin in advance at scbaldwin@comcast.net.

If for some reason a player cannot make any tryout session but really wants to play, some Mad Dog teams will take players later, but you need to contact Steve Baldwin at scbaldwin@comcast.net.

Good luck to everyone at tryouts!
