Tryout Procedures and Requirements
Mad
Dogs Tryout/Registration Form for 2008
Season
Each
age group will utilize a half rink at
tryouts, although the two age groups may
be mixed together during scrimmages. Numbers
will be assigned to every player, to be
worn on the back of their jerseys in order
to help the evaluators keep everyone straight.
1) Please bring one dark and one light
jersey
2) Fill out Tryout/Registration form and
make a check out to “Mad Dogs for
$35. Bring form and check to tryout or
you can send them before the tryout to
Steve Baldwin, 42833 Early Light Place,
Ashburn, VA 20148.
3) Make sure your son has wheels described
as “Very Soft” or “Xtra
Soft” or he will slip making turns
and stops.
4) The player must be dressed and ready
to go out 5 minutes before his tryout
begins.
Other
Important Tryout Information
- Except for our U18 and U16 teams, the
Mad Dogs are organized by birth year in
general, but there may be exceptions for
a variety of reasons.
- The Mad Dogs have two "Blue"
teams. These teams are considered second
teams but are often as competitive as
the first team. We will field a ’95
and a U16 Blue team this year.
- If there is a great interest by some
parents and players to form other Blue
teams, this may be possible. However,
it may be difficult to find practice time
at the Box and such teams may have to
practice elsewhere.
- Most Mad Dog teams practice once a week
or less. However the U16 and U18 teams
will not practice and will instead enter
the adult inline league and use that as
practice.
- There is only one official tryout per
team. However, Mad Dog coaches have the
option to withhold judgment on select
players and bring these players to the
first practice, thereby, in effect, using
the first practice a second tryout opportunity
for certain players. Such players must
complete a Tryout/Registration form and
bring it to the first practice with a
$35 check.
- Mad Dog teams are very competitive and
due to rosters being as small as 8-10
players, we urge parents to downplay expectations.
Many travel ice hockey players have been
cut from our teams. If an "A"
or “White” team does not select
a player, then the Blue team – if
there is one -- or another birth year
team within the same age division, has
the option to choose the player, assuming,
of course, the player is interested.
- We highly recommend that those interested
in trying out get on their inline skates
a few times before the tryout, especially
those who have played ice hockey exclusively
all winter. Many inline rinks will allow,
for a small fee, individuals to come practice
by themselves if there is nothing else
scheduled.
- Equipment requirements: Helmet with
face cage/shield, mouthpiece, elbow guards,
shin guards, gloves. Regarding skates,
if the player does not have wheels categorized
as “Xtra Soft” or “Very
Soft” he will slip when he turns.
The surface is a professional roller hockey
surface of the kind used at all the major
tournaments. The puck travels very fast
on the floor but if the player has typical
outdoor wheels on, he will be slipping
frequently.
